In Weird Wonder Tales, Ron Hanna has collected eight stories that definitely fit into the weird category, unfortunately not all them are wonderful by any means, but the superb The Thing that Dined on Death by John H. Knox more than makes up for some of the weaker entries. It's a shame that Ron hasn't included any information as to where and when these stories first appeared, I'm guessing mid-thirties - though I know that the Robert Leslie Bellem story appeared in 1940. The first thing that grabs you are the story titles - Black Pool for Hell Maidens, Blood-Bait for Hungry Mermaids, Blood for the Vampire Dead etc - presumably a striking title was obligatory back then!
The aforementioned John H. Knox story is easily the standout story - animals are being savagely mutilated, young women have disappeared, and a local doctor is the main suspect. His investigation twists and turns until the superb climax, and the culprit was a plot twist that I certainly never saw coming. A superbly deranged piece of work that overshadows the other pieces, though the Bellem, Wells and Wallace stories each have their excellent moments.
Thanks must go to Ron for dusting off some of these weird and wonderful stories from the pulps and getting them back into print. The first of many such volumes,I can only hope.
